Dear Friends in Christ,
Lent comes soon. Repentance should come now. You don’t have to wait for Ash Wednesday; repentance is our life as the children of God. Turning from sin to forgiveness in Christ alone, that is repentance. When Ash Wednesday comes at the end of this month, the call to repent will intensify; still the call it is always ringing out from the Word. Repent. Humble yourself. Become meek. Confess your sin to God and your neighbor. Plead to be forgiven in Christ. Seek the Lord in His Word of Gospel, in the promise of your Baptism and in His very Body and Blood.
The Lord Himself has said, “I will leave in your midst a meek and humble people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD” Zephaniah 3:12 . Luther comments on this passage, “In few but very beautiful words he is describing the church of Christ, that it is a poor, needy, and oppressed people who call on the Lord and hope in the Lord. This is the greatest righteousness; this is the highest worship of God (AE 18: 358).”
Therefore, for us members of St. Paul’s, it is time to know and remember that the highest worship of God is to acknowledge who we all are together; poor, needy and oppressed people who call on the Lord Jesus Christ and put all our hope in Him. We are poor and needy in sin; oppressed by our sinful flesh, devil and the world. Our flesh has its desires and of course justifies them always. The devil provides one temptation after another, and we give in - easily. This fallen world full of shame and vice disguised as freedom would have us come along with it to destruction. Repent.
Again, repentance always looks to Christ, to receive what He has to give in His Word. Repentance and worship of God are joined together for the greatest way, the highest way to worship God is to receive from Him all that He promises to give and actually does give in Word and Sacrament. So our confession of faith says, “The greatest possible comfort comes from this doctrine that the highest worship in the Gospel is the desire to receive forgiveness of sins, grace, and righteousness (Apology of the Augsburg Confession IV, 310).” So in our congregation the greatest and highest things that happen among us are when God is at work, doing what He has always done, forgiving, giving life, renewing, recreating all in His Word. As we receive this work of God then we know and believe that we truly are members of the Church of Jesus Christ, His forgiven people who hear His voice.
So then whatever we might discuss and talk about in our congregation, let us all remember that the greatest form of worship is to receive the gifts of Christ Jesus. He has instituted their giving in Word and Sacrament, and He will give always. Faith lives upon nothing else.
In Christ,
Pastor Ball
Dear Friends in Christ,
What will the year of our Lord 2012 bring? Of course the federal elections will be in November, but It may be that this year our Lord will return and deliver us all into everlasting joy. Perhaps there will be no elections because the elect in Christ will be given everlasting resurrected life. Such things are for our Father in heaven to decide. We are to watchful and waiting, seeking what our Lord has promised to bring; gifts of forgiveness, life and salvation. If our Lord does not return in this month of January, 2012, we will celebrate the great festival of the Epiphany of our Lord on January 6th. Led by a star and then by the Word of God the Magi from the East saw the child in the house with His mother and fell down and worshipped Him. They brought their gifts, but what need does He have of such things? He would have no need, but Mary and Joseph certainly could put them to good use.
So it is with us, we come to worship the child in His House here in Brookfield. The chief worship of Him is to receive gifts from Him, that is what 2012 will bring for sure. His continued giving to us. We bring gifts that He Himself has no use for. All things already are His, but like back then with the Magi presenting gifts to Jesus, other people can make good use of them. That’s the way it is with your gift giving in the House of the Lord, you give what you have been given already so that your gifts may be put to good use in the preaching of forgiveness of sins, in the instruction of young and old in Church and School, for the teaching and administration of the Gospel and the Holy Sacraments, for the care of your brothers and sisters in Christ here and where there is need. We do not know all that 2012 will bring except those things that have been promised by our Lord in His Word. His Word is what brings the “exceedingly great joy” (Matthew 2:10 ) that the Magi had. Do you need exceedingly great joy in 2012? Of course, and you find it in the House of the Lord where Jesus Christ comes with promises and gifts for you.
In Christ,
Pastor Ball
